Fueled by little more than passion and fascination director/producer Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse, Grimm's Fairy Tales and The ABC's of Death) embarked on a journey to create a documentary that tells the story of the Nic Cage/Tim Burton Superman movie that was killed before it had a chance to live.
One successful kickstarted campaign, hours of work, and a trip to Burton's London home later, and the doc is on its way to completion. Schnepp was on hand at New York Comic Con today along with producer Holly Payne to talk about what it takes to create a documentary, the crafty methods they utilized to reach both Kevin Smith and Burton, and what they've discovered about what could have been one of the more interesting - and wacky - superhero movies of our time. One which, as Payne says, many people assume "would have been a disaster." Schnepp and Payne are both convinced, however, that Burton's vision had all of the elements to yield a great film.
The team also unveiled roughly 20-minutes of additional footage that provides an in-depth look at what would have been Superman's regeneration suit, and I must say, this was some pretty innovative work being done. In total, the documentary looks to be a must-see for film and Supes fans alike.
Schnepp plans to include extended segments of their footage on the DVD for The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, to give fans even more of a sense of just how far Burton and his team got with their concept, as well as a perspective of why the project ultimately fell apart.
