Todd Farmer (Drive Angry co-writer) has revealed on his blog that he and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry co-writer and director) were in talks to create Ghost Rider 2 and did an entire pitch for the film, which he has now unleashed online!
From Todd Farmer's Blog:
During one of our many meetings, De Luca, who had produced Ghost Rider, suggested we come up with a pitch for Ghost Rider 2. We said yes with much enthusiasm. So Mike set a meeting with Avi Arad that we might meet and discuss the franchise. And we had a blast. We met Avi and his son Ari (who sat with me and Tom Jane during the My Bloody Valentine premiere). We talked superheroes and what made Ghost Rider different. We talked through what Vilains we could legally draw from. It was a perfect meeting.
Patrick and I returned to the ghostcave and worked our magic. We decided to not only create a pitch but since there were so many entities involved (Avi, Marvel, Sony and De Luca) we would create a document we could leave behind. A doc that would represent our story, our characters and our tone. And that’s what we did.
When we returned we were pumped. We had nailed it. It may seem arrogant to say that but DUH. Isn’t that the point? Why would you ever go back if you didn’t think you nailed it? During the initial chit chat I said something along the lines of, “We know there are several entities involved here but we think we’ve found a story that fulfills everyone’s concerns.” Avi then informed me that there was only one entity that mattered. Everyone laughed. I gulped.
And the pitch was fun!
We knew De Luca dug it. Later we heard that Sony loved it.
But in the end Avi passed. He said it was too violent.
Hate not getting the job but I’ll take TOO VIOLENT as the reason any day of the week.
Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer did an epic job with Drive Angry and I really like this pitch for their Ghost Rider, it would undoubteldy have made a great film, they have that cool badass sensibility. But, for me the unique Neveldine and Taylor essence and filmmaking style matches the vibe they wanted to create with Ghost Rider this time around and brings it further to the edge, or off the edge while still keeping it a non R-rated film. in other words their style brings that gritty badass vibe without having to use the violence to get it (not that it is not violent in some ways or that their other films are not violent ). just the way they shoot and edit things brings another dimension that takes it into another realm, which is what was wanted for this movie and if Sony were not going to let it go all the way to R-rated, Neveldine and Taylor have still created a very dark and edgy movie.
I read the blog but not the pitch, Lula. Have to have more time and patience to read it all. But I completely enjoyed N and T's movie, still, it is interesting to think about what Lussier and Farmer would have done.
I recommend the read when you get time Lady T, it is like reading a very cool Ghost Rider fan fic!
I really do hope Nic works with Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer again, I love what they did with Drive Angry, (and their other films like My Bloody Valentine) but Neveldine and Taylor where the right men for the GR:SOV job!
