So it is basically a fancy case? I have never heard of Steelbook before. It looks pretty cool, especially with that flaming skull image on the back! I must check at future shop to see if they are still doing it here.

A steelbook is like an ordinary cover, but only made out of metal (or something like metal). I have those editions for the first "GR" (which is a special 2-dvd-extended edition) and "NEXT"! :)

If any Marvel comic brought to the big screen outside of Daredevil and Elektra did not need a sequel, it was Ghost Rider. The initial film, which also starred Nicolas Cage as the damned daredevil Johnny Blaze, suffered from a disappointing plot and drawn out storyline that was rescued only by the fine, although over-the-top, special effects and near creature feature camp. Enter Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance; Cage and his possessed punisher on a hog are back for another go, leather jacket in tow, of course.

At the urging of a somewhat renegade French priest (Idris Elba) the Ghost Rider must help protect young Danny (Fergus Riordan) from the Devil (Ciarán Hinds) who plans to use Danny, his own spawn, to become human and wield more power on Earth than ever before. Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, Danny, and Danny’s mom, a beautiful Gypsy named Nadya (Violante Placido), must escape from the hordes of minions that the Devils sends to claim Danny for to perform the final rite that will allow him to insert his soul into Danny’s body.

Despite some cool, although, yet again, fright night-ish graphics, Spirit of Vengeance loses itself very early on, from Blaze’s tortured soul routine to the ridiculously slow unfolding of a story we all know is coming. I mean, really, Satan’s spawn? Hasn’t that been done to death already?

Captured in high definition on the Red One MX cinematographic HD video camera at 4.5K resolution, Spirit of Vengeance gets an excellent AVC/MPEG-4 1080p/24 transfer to Blu-ray in 2D from Sony. Foreground and background details are strong while black levels are nice and inky. Meanwhile, shadow details are nicely nuanced; the end result of this is great sense of contrast. Colors are nicely saturated especially reds and oranges which help the flames of the Ghost Rider really stand out.

Sadly, this “3D” image is a conversion from the 2D capture. Granted, this is one of the better 2D conversions of late, but is still cannot compare to the 3D effect of a native 3D production such as Underworld: Awakening orAvatar. I get the sense from the brief 3D making-of provided here that the decision was made to go with a conversion rather than a native production based on costs, well, you get what you pay for. Nothing really stands out about this 3D image. It looks rather flat the majority of the time with hardly any front to back depth and no real pop-out.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz/24-bit) soundtrack is almost the equal of the disc’s 2D image, providing a dynamic and engaging soundscape. The rumble of motorcycle engines is beefy action is panned throughout the room and dialogue is crystal clear with no hint of clipping.

An exclusive 3D making-of is offered on the 3D disc, while the 2D disc gets an in-movie video commentary, deleted scenes and a lengthier making-of featurette covering all points of the film;s production all done ins crisp 1080p.

Interesting that they give overall quality a full mark, but less for the 3-D. Probably for the fact that the 3-D was added afterwards.  I am no connoisseur, so couldn't comment knowledgably anyway, but I look forward to seeing it again so I can judge for myself!

Looking forward to the extra features a lot too!

I noticed that too Lady T..but in my limited experience there does seem to be a prejudice around  post converted 3 D?

More on te blu-ra extras here, but perhaps skip the review!

The commentary with Neveldine andTaylor sound superb, from such film heads you would expect nothing less but it is still exciting to hear!

and check out what dvd talk say about the deleted scenes!!! flaming

Extras

Not a lot of bullet points, no, but the ones that are here are kinda big.

  • The Path to Vengeance (89 min.; HD): Gotta admit that I didn't waltz in expecting to see a feature-length, six-part making-of doc on this Blu-ray disc, and yet...! The Path to Vengeance tackles pretty much every stage of putting a movie like this together, and it's impressively candid rather than belting out an hour and a half of cheerleading and back-patting. It's expressly stated that the budget was a fraction of what the original Ghost Rider had at its fingertips, there was essentially zero prep time, they did a lousy job lining up the gear they needed and didn't have any camera rigs or anything with three or four days to go till shooting was supposed to start, some of the people they relied on in in Eastern Europe constantly bulls***ted them and screwed them out of locations, and...yeah, the list goes on from there. Even though I think Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is kind of terrible, I'll admit to being amazed that there's a finished product, period, with as grueling an experience as it clearly was.

...but yeah, clocking in at an hour and a half and all, this doc is exceptionally thorough: dusting off a decade-old, hard-R script that even predates the first Ghost Rider, gutting the dense mythology out of David S. Goyer's original screenplay, dragging their cameras all over Eastern Europe, getting Nic Cage to play flaming-head-Ghost Rider rather than handing that part of the shoot off to a nameless stuntman, the quantum leaps in visual effects over just the
    1.jpg
[click on the thumbnail to enlarge]
past six years, sound design, the score, testing, marketing...you name it and the smart money says it's in here somewhere. There's a metric ton of behind-the-scenes footage too, including the directors operating the cameras themselves from acrobatic wire rigs and on rollerblades, hanging onto the back of a speeding motorcycle. That's more than a little bit badass. The recording of the voices of the damned spirits is a definite highlight as well. Wouldn't have expected it, considering that I didn't think all that much of the movie itself, but I dug The Path to Vengeance quite a bit.

  • Expanded Video Commentary (HD): I'm used to those picture-in-picture tracks that recycle a lot of the making-of footage I've already watched, and I was sort of expecting more of the same from Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. As luck would have it...? Nope! Despite there being a feature-length documentary elsewhere on this Blu-ray disc, there's no warmed-over footage and very little overlap, period, between these three hours' worth of extras.

Unlike the usual running commentaries, directors Neveldine and Taylor pause the movie, cut away to behind-the-scenes footage, etc., etc., etc., so it actually runs ten minutes or so longer than Spirit of Vengeance does on its own. Some footage appears in a picture-in-picture window, but a good bit fills the entire screen, and sometimes Neveldine/Taylor stand in front of all of it as well. The whole thing is kinda fun and freewheeling, not taking itself anywhere remotely as seriously as the Path to Vengeancedoc. You get masturbation jokes, boob-lusting, and a neverending parade of mostly terrible jokes. To rattle off a few highlights, the two directors point out a guy-versus-wild-boar brawl in the background that I completely missed, they explain (well, sort of) a bit where Ghost Rider starts spinning counterclockwise in the air for no discernable reason, they point out a cave set that was constructed out of leftover styrofoam from a game show, and they talk about setting the climax of the movie during the daytime. I know! Guy with a flaming skull in the bright of day: whodathunkit? Not essential viewing or anything, but the video commentary delivers enough dumb fun that I found it worth a listen. Errr...listen and a look. You know what I mean.

  • Deleted Scenes (11 min.; HD): There are six deleted and extended scenes in this reel, including a half-transformed Johnny Blaze stumbling around a church, an excruciatingly tedious sequence where Satan tries to rent a car, and a kinda-sorta-not-really tender father/son moment that calls back to demonic flamethrower pissing. Mostly awful, but I do really like an alternate penance stare sequence with the raw elements -- green screen; Nic Cage with LED necklaces and a painted-on skull -- on full display.

This past weekend I went to my Walmarts store to buy the new DVD of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. WOW! I love it. More action and darker but very good acting from our own NICK! I laugh at the funny lines he had and about the flaming you know what! Glad they had the extras on the regular DVD with the deleted scenes. Nice. I had my sister, Barbara and my brother-in-law, Henry up here with us this weekend stay. They love the movie too. They seen the first Ghost Rider and enjoyed both. I never got the chance to see this film in the theaters. It never came to the movie houses where I live sorry to say. Don't know why. They always carry Nick's films. Oh, well it was worth the wait for it on DVD.

Thank you thank you thank you Misters Cage, Taylor and Neveldine...this blu-ray is almost as thrilling as seeing the film itself! blinkingskullflaming

WOW They have been so generous with the extras, has anyone else checked them all out? wow2

the only thing that could have improved them was commentary including Nic as well, but I respect and undersnand Nic's decision not to do more commentaries, (he has mentioned in a couple of times in interviews he does like doing them and will not be doing any more) and he has been incredbly forthcoming about the role and his processes in all the interviews and publicity.
