Valley Girl (1983)
Tagline: She's cool. He's hot. She's from the Valley. He's not.
Character: Randy
Director: Martha Coolidge
Producers: Wayne Crawford Andrew Lane
Writers: Wayne Crawford Andrew Lane

Movie Synopsis:
Nicolas Cage appears in his first leading role as Randy, a punk hunk from the city, in this eighties teen movie. A satiric romantic comedy with undertones of Romeo and Juliet, following the love story between Randy and Valley Girl Julie, who find themselves powerfully drawn to each other despite their totally different styles, friends and lives. Can a valley girl who has it all find happiness with a Hollywood punk?
Trailer:
Interesting Facts:
This was Nicolas Cage's first role as 'Nicolas Cage'. it was important to him to get the part on his own merits, not because of his family name.
His chest hair was shaved like a triangle, for a Superman look.
To highlight the contrast between the two lead characters, scenes in the valley were shot using brighter lighting and pastel colours, and in the city using darker colours and lighting.
Soundtrack: The soundtrack was especially selected to enhance the contrast between the city and the valley, and all the music was chosen from contemporary bands by Martha Coolidge and included:
The Plimsouls Josie Cotton Richard Butler The Payolas Peter Case Scott Wilk
Nicolas Cage Movie Quote:
"It´s still one of my favorite movies, actually, because it was a situation I´d gone through in [Beverly Hills] high school. I was taking the bus there, and other guys were driving Porsches. If there was a beautiful girl and I wanted to take her out, I couldn´t do it, she just wouldn´t go for it. I think that movie was about not listening to your friends, that it´s 'just you and me.'"
DVD info:
Director Martha Coolidge provides an in depth audio commentary on the entire filmmaking process, including an incredible insight into how Nicolas cage landed the part of Randy and various aspects of his performance. Only available on Region 1 DVD.

My brain only works on one power... The power of Nicolas Cage!
the beginning is the set up for the whole Romeo / Randy and Juliet / Julie subtext to the film. the suburban Valley, the clothes the hairstyle, the language, but it is not 'til a while into the film we get the contrast with the urban side and hollywood!
While watching that scenes in the mall, I was transported back into my own youth. Although, I haven`t had a creditcard, I liked to hang out in the local shopping mall a lot! :)
