It may be because The Wizard of Oz is one of my favourite, if not my all time favourite movie, but I can really see a comparison between Wormwood Forest in Season Of The Witch and the Haunted Forest in The Wizard Of Oz!
It struck me like a bolt of lightning te first time I saw the movie and I was so thrilled!
In Season Of The Witch, as the characters approach and enter Wormwood Forest ( just after the rickety bridge scene ) the look and sounds are so uncannily similar! ( wish I could find a clip of that awesome moment from SOTW! )
what a pleasure and joy to read this post, thank you for showing it, i only watched The Wizard Of Oz once, it made me laught so hard, must watch it again, no i'm sure i will do it again and again:)you have a fantastic sense of humour by the way
Well I am very glad you enjoyed my inane rambles Tues, sometimes i go off on something that is overwhelmingly amazing for me, but it may ot really resonate with anyone else!
I am deadly serious with my comparison by the way, in case you are giving me comedy powers I don't really have!
Wow, you laughed in the haunted forest in The Wizard Of Oz? those flying mnkeys are scarrrrryyyyyyyyy!!!
I guess a big difference being the forest in Season Of The Witch was 'real' (and very beautiful scenery too) and the one in The Wizard Of Oz was not! But bah! what is real anyway!!
When I first saw SOTW I was struck by the name Wormwood Forest because it sounds so familiar. I have looked to no avail for anything else with that name, except the forest at Chernobyl, which is a real life horror story. I thought maybe in The Hobbit or LOTR, but I was thinking of Mirkwood. And the scene in both of your clips, Lula, is much like what I visualize when I read The Hobbit when they travel through Mirkwood, very spooky indeed! These are great scenes!
Wormwood is also a herb and plant, can be used medicinally and has been done so since ancient egyptian times. It is also the key ingredient in that other worldly green drink Absinthe, which apparently many 19th century poets liked to drink because it had an effect on creativity and expanded consciousness, giving extra sensory perception! Love things like that, prefer to make that association than the chernobyl one, although such tragedy adds to the grim tone of the forests in the movie.
Yes, there must be literature and film riddled with such woods and forest, it is the classic atmosphere that all dark fairytales and horrors must have as a key ingredient! But with these two specific scenes from Season Of The Witch and Wizard Of Oz I was struck how the approach to the woods and the sounds are so very similar. I have searched and cannot find a clip anywhere of that part of Season of The Witch!!!
Isn't Absinthe supposed to be this insane liquer that has an extremely high volume of alcohol content? Wow!!
I can def see how you can compare the Wormwood Forest and Haunted Forest. I also enjoyed The Wizard of Oz. I remember when they changed it to color or the first time I watched a version of it in color.
NICe to see you again nicoalscageiscosmic! I should have guessed by your username that this would appeal! there is something really quite mystical and magical about both these films, albeit in these scenes, also scary and dark!
The wormwood herb had been used for centuries for many purposes, yes gina it is a liquer and it seems it was valued more for its psychotropic properties and their effects on creativity in the 19th century! have always found Wizard Of Oz to be a really trippy film..who needs Absinthe?
I too love that moment when the film goes from black and white to colour Gina, as the door opens onto munchkinland , like a portal into a world of pure magic! also a very important moment in cinematic history!
