Perhaps more the latter in The Bad Lieutenant? as it is hard to see anything cosmic about it in the literal sense of the word, but definitely in terms of a more abstract approach and perhaps in Nic's acting style a trancendence as if channeling something!
Indeed, i did previously post other parts of this interview Lady True, and here they are!
Everyone thinks Nic played a bad/mean cop in Bad Leutenant, but I think he played a mostly good man who was doing his best while dealing with a lot of pain - from an injury he got while saving a criminal (the first scene in the movie). And the last scene is so full of heart rending, rare beauty, as he talks to the criminal he saved, who has gone on to a good life, after causing Nic's life to be full of pain and struggle - and Nic's character has the supreme grace to not mention any of that, but to silently bear the burden, chuckle, and be genuinely happy for the guy, wish him well! Wow. That is grace personified! I think that the grace he shows at the end is very transcendent, and thus cosmic.
