Interesting insights into Nic as an actor on the Drive Angry audio commentary!

Lol, no not another transcript, but just wanted to see if anyone else has listened to the audio commentary with directors Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer on the Drive angry DVD yet?

It is fascinating....gives several insights into how Nic develped his character, most notaly for me was how he gave Milton more depth and dimensionality, Patrick Lussier commented that they had written Milton as more of a straight line,  Nic made him "both softer and harder". starry

They also commented on the lines Nic came up with, the ideas he had for the film in general and the things he refused to do, as well as saying that he is an exceptional actor. starry

I haven't listened to it all yet, I have a short attention span for listening to audio although I enjoy it. I find Patrick Lussier hard to understand as he seems to have been sufferig from a really bad cold when he did it.  I heard them say that Nic said he wouldn't cuss as Milton, and then I realized, oh yeah, so he didn't!

I heard the commentary on the church scene and they both said (I think) that that was their favourite scene, it is mine too, or one of my favourites. That it was Nic's idea to say 'Oh, because you're obnoxious', to the Accountant, which I wondered about, it sounds so Nic-like! Hard to remember it all, but lots of good stuff there.

I found the commentary to be really fresh, upbeat, interesting, funny and insightful. that flowing over the top of the movie is a treat all by itself! starry

Patrick Lussier had laryngitis I think, but a creative man with a husky voice alway works for me. Did feel for him though, wanted to slip him some honey and lemon! He and Todd Farmer were both just so passionate about the movie and the actors!

I know some people don't like audio commentary, I think Nic himself is not that fond of them these days, but I always find them only enriching to the film. Definitely not before watching the movie though!action

I find myself watching the screen and forgetting to listen to the commentary quite often when it is a Nic scene!

Lol! it's a multitasking frenzy!

yeah, i did love hearing about the ad libbed stuff Nic did, and everything that he personally brought to the film and how he brought Milton to 'life' ( lol! )

I do recall that, about Nic refusing to swear! maybe he used up his cuss quota in The Bad Lieutenant!?!?!  He also refused to undress, and as much as I always enjoy a glimpse of Nic's gorgeous naked form on film, it works.... after all, Milton never disrobes before a gun fight.... bowsmiley

Ummhmm, having just watched Red Rock West I can wholeheartedly agree about Nic's gorgeous naked form on film. Well, semi-naked! Yes, it made sense when I realized that he, Milton, set up the whole thing as a trap. As Nic or someone else commented somewhere, Milton was always prepared and ready. It was all planned.

Which means that he used Candy in a way I find quite obnoxious, to borrow Milton's word. I have a hard time with those aspects of Milton, he was dead, and from Hell, and a hardened criminal in life, so it makes sense that he was cold and deadly in this return to the living ( or whatever it was ). Because he was hard to that sweet and sexy little waitress he kissed, and telling Candy to calm down in that impatient voice ( which they said was Nic's adlib) was so cold.

But why was he so tender wih Amber, did she remind him of what he lost, was that the motivation, I wonder? Seems at odds with the character to me, anyway.

I know we aren't supposed to take it seriously being a grindhouse movie and all, with the whole thing hyper unreal and tongue in cheek, but now you mention it...I agree, that part where Milton told Candy to calm down was cutting, it was the only point in the whole movie where I didn't like Milton. Lussier and Farmer talked about that mix of the film being disturbing and funny ( or maybe i dreamt that ) but i find it interesting when a film brings up discomfort in me. I guess the humour comes because it is so over the top and out there,  the whole scene,  violent, extreme, but yes also funny. The part where Candy is sitting on the floor later on obviously having lost the plot totally, ..that was both funny and disturbing.. funny because of the line she used to the cop..which i cannot remember exactly enough to quote!

What do you think of the treatment of women overall in the film? perhaps it would be tempting to see it as kinda polarized, you gotta be a bad ass motherf***er or a sex object! but, Amber's character was so much more, she is the film's saving grace as far as gender exploitation goes, as quoted many a time, she was also the heart of the movie, she was not just feisty and strong, but also intelligent and righteous, and her relationship with Milton is that amazing uncondiotional connection, which actually makes both characters multi dimensional. I guess i liked that Milton wasn't just a straight line. flaming

I hesitated to comment about it because, as you say, we aren't suppose to take it seriously, but I was affected by it, even so. I think Lussier and Farmer did describe it that way, and they chuckled about it, I know. I found the scene funny in the sense that you are going, oh my god all the way through it, it's so over the top. Like watching a really out-there comedy act. you can't believe they just said that, or in this case, did that!

I thought the movie was true to it's genre, and that means it is not my type of movie, generally I find it depressing to watch sexploitation movies, or I will rephrase, what I consider sexploitation movies. But it is Nic and he was awesome in it,  and I actually liked it quite a bit for other aspects. Like Amber, I thought she was wonderful.

To me drive angry is totally fantasticwow2 it is in my opinion a role made for Nic he took the role and you can tell watching the film he made it his own and he seemed to have fun during filming and the cast all seem so strong no wonder it turned into a fantastic film.
The audio on the dvd was great i love watching and listening to them has you get more info on the thoughts that have gone into making the film and how the charachters have grown stronger or weaker depending on the actor playing them. I truelly think Drive angry has to be my new favorite the way nics character is hard but also caring makes the film its a great story as well a bit strange but hey escaping hell who wouldnt want to the concept to me is great .
I think am addicted been watching it all week.
The last scene where the car nic drives flips over and he crawls out he looks so amazing in that shot .I also totally love the line' i never disrobe before a gunfight' makes me laugh that bit its fantastic.
The whole film is definatly amazing . great soundtrack as well i love it its amazing .
