Found this list below at this blog, http://www.futilitycloset.com/ which is a pretty cool site.

Do you have any beautiful words to add to this list? Maybe we can make a poem with them.

My beautiful word is cadence.

Lexicographer Wilfred Funk declared these the 10 most beautiful words in English:

  • chimes
  • dawn
  • golden
  • hush
  • lullaby
  • luminous
  • melody
  • mist
  • murmuring
  • tranquil

mmmmmmm they are beautiful lady true............... very soft lulling and satisfying on the tongue stars
I guess I have different favourites for different times. I love the energy of the word 'kaleidoscopic' ...others of the top of my head, beguiling, gentle, shine, transcend, enigma, iridescence, glissade....

Amazing words, I think English is a beautiful language, and I've read somewhere that nearly 50 percent of words in modern English are originally from French. Not sure about how many words/phrases were coined by Chaucer and Shakespeare because I dont speak it, but there is no denying that those literary icons have made great efforts to enrich the languages we use. I really admire those of you who are able to handle 20 thousand words or greater.
Succulent, I have been eating pretty much fruit recentlychortle Saccharine, like wearing a saccharine smile? Aubade, the first word comes to my mind every day. Clement, I know the clement weather this year in where i live would spell trouble for northern parts of my country. SunbirdLackadaisical, also fond of "Shibboleth", both are beautiful-sounding words. Nuance, I tell you the chinese character for warm/warmness is sounds like Nuan, in third tone.chortle

All nice and beautiful words you have added!

And that is right Tues, many English words come from French, allthough French is a latin laungauge and English is a langauge from the Germans (in ancient history, if I recall my history class right) But trough the battles many times the land was mixed up and taken over again and again etc. And that is how come there are many English words with a French family tree flowerface

Such beautiful words, does the meaning of the word affect the loveliness of it for some, I wonder. Or is it true that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet?

I think, if a rose would named different, like with something smelly or stinky in it, then, I guess, not, but, there are other flowers, which are so beautiful, too! I picked "rose", because part of my mom`s first name is "Rose". I think, that is part of the reason, why! :)

Thank you Eva!! Although we are taught little about ancient European in history class, I think you are right. Both German and English belong to Germanic and IE language family. I learned that Anglo-Saxons were the 2nd set of invaders of England, these Germanic people left their language and govt, hope thats what you meant, and the Normans had been the fourth conquerors, they left castles, you know French was their official language, they enrich the vocabulary, so i think it SOMEWHAT explains many English words are French original. Thank you for the reminder. I must apologise to you, what I had read was nearly 125,000 out of 450,000 words in English vocabulary are coined & recorded during the last half-century. I'm somebody who is amazed by how the language and Englishmen are compatible with other cultures, beginning to wonder how much Catherine the Great envied Queen Victoria if was in contemporary with Her. Mosaic is a beautiful one too, may I ask, did you go to see the small towns built by the Romans when you was in England last time?

It's very subjective Lady T!! I have a special fondness for beautiful-sounding words, even though not all of them have a pleasant meaning. It's lovely to let those beautiful words slip off the tongue I thinkchortlechortle

Thank you for sharing it with us, Roxy! As a name, Rose is as beautiful as Charlotte, I mean it.lotus
