hi all, have you guys noticed that there are many mirror scenes in Nic'sthat havent been found out yet, such as Next, BLPOCNO, Deadfall. there is at least one shot where Nic looks into the mirror or we can see him in a mirror in those movies,it's not an answer to this question haha
Everyone thinks Nic played a bad/mean cop in Bad Leutenant, but I think he played a mostly good man who was doing his best while dealing with a lot of pain - from an injury he got while saving a criminal (the first scene in the movie). And the last scene is so full of heart rending, rare beauty, as he talks to the criminal he saved, who has gone on to a good life, after causing Nic's life to be full of pain and struggle - and Nic's character has the supreme grace to not mention any of that, but to silently bear the burden, chuckle, and be genuinely happy for the guy, wish him well! Wow. That is grace personified!
An interesting point, Lady Grace! For me Terence is the unltimate personification of Nic's talent to be able to bring massive complexity to a character.
I do not think it is possible to label him as bad ot good, or indeed to completely judge or dismiss his acts because of the clever character story about how he became hooked on drugs. There are undoubtedly some things he carries out that are difficult to overlook as him being a mere victim, the scene with the oxygen tube and the gun being the standout one for me. and less obviously i guess his unfaithfulness to Frankie (and the circumstances).
But there are also plenty of tender moments (however warped) and his motivation often seems to be a caring one. i love the silver spoon scenes...i think they highlight how broken he has become and that his heart is still the same heart of a young boy before the layers of crap distorted him. but I think where the audience falls is down to their own abitlity to be unconditional and non judgemental genereally.
I was thinking the other day about the Terence we met at the begiinning of the film before his injury...was he really a good cop then? his actions certaily showed when the proverbial hit the fan he did 'the right thing'.
I could go on forever...but yes, the complexity of this character, and film, and we've not even touched on how such badassery can be so funny, is pretty awesome. thanks Lady G!
These are neat, Tues, have you seen his movie? I have not. It is odd that the reflection does not seem to match, or is that Nics reflection looking at someone else?
