Nicolas Cage is the latest name to join the fray as production has begun on Oliver Stone’s "Snowden," his international thriller centered on the story of whistleblower Edward Snowden. Cage will play the role of a former U.S. Intelligence Official in the film that already stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the former computer contractor who leaked classified National Security Agency documents in the summer of 2013.
Aside from Gordon-Levitt in the title role, the movie features a critically-acclaimed cast comprised of Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans (“The Amazing Spider-Man”), Joely Richardson, and Timothy Olyphant.
Principal photography is currently underway in Munich and will continue in various locations around the world until mid-May. And it looks like the drama will vie for Oscar. Open Road Films will release the movie on December 25th, with Pathe following in France on December 30th, and Universum in Germany on January 7th.
The news, we suspect is perfectly timed: last night Laura Poitras' Edward Snowden doc "CitizenFour" won Best Documentary at the Oscars.
That is great news! I watched the ceremony (at least, the majority of it), and I saw the part, where that documentary won the award! Looking forward to it! Nic once worked with Oliver Stone before on "World Trade Center"! And, great to hear, that it will have a german release as well (on Nic`s b-day)! Thanks for posting it, Enzo!

This sounds really great! Loved Nic in WTC, so I am thinking he and Oliver Stone will work more magic in this film. Sounds like one of those movies that get a lot of attention too. Says it has started filming already, isn't Nic currently working on another movie?
Nic does so many movies currently at the same time! It is incredNICble, how he does that! He def loves, what he does! And, from what I read somewhere, is, that Oliver Stone started filming in Munich, Germany!

I think Joe really brought him back in the minds of some top tier directors in Hollywood. Between Snowden, The Runner, and USS Indianapolis... the future is looking bright.
