Do you feel that Nicolas Cage is underappreciated?

Because I do. I think it's really unfair that one man does so much and no one seems to pay any attention. Nicolas Cage is a household name for sure and he always will be but he seems to be known for his big action blockbusters and that is not a bad thing but it leads people to believe that all he does is big over the top action. I was talking about Lord of War the other day to someone saying Cage was really suave and subtle in that film and she just laughed, saying that Nicolas Cage is not subtle, I said I'd watch it with her to prove her wrong and prove her wrong I did. It might seem like I'm making the same forum post twice but its just something that really bugs me. He is also a very generous person and does many things for charity and is considered one of the most generous Hollywood stars but how much of that is publicized? His charitable activities have finally been added to Wikipedia so I guess that's a start. He has also been criticized by other actors for his movie choices... That is just rude and wrong. Why is it their job to tell Nicolas he is doing bad? Who suddenly gave them the right to judge? Nicolas is allowed to do what he wants and props to him! It seems in Hollywood you're not allowed to experiment because that means that they can't make truckloads of money. Nicolas is a normal person just like everyone else and he is allowed to try new things now and then and I believe he said that in an interview, something about 'if I made a mistake I learn from it and move on... ...but it seems in the movie business you're never allowed to do that' Truer words have never been spoken, Nicolas, I feel your pain. Another reason why I think he is underappreciated is because he is always doing something different  which is good for a filmography but not for general movie goers. If a general movie goer wants to watch a comedy, they'll think of Jim Carrey. If they want to watch an action film, they might think of Bruce Willis. With Nicolas Cage that is not the case and I think it is brilliant, while I do think that his choice of movie roles over the last couple of years haven't been as varied as they used to be (personally I'd like to see Nicolas Cage in a comedy again) but they're still very varied and its great to see. I won't name names because of the websites rules but you get the same actors being in the same generic action film every year and people still go and see it. Nicolas Cage on the other hand has been: a treasure hunter, a car thief, a phobia-riddled con-man, a corrupt detective, an Italian lover, an arms dealer, a hitman, a teacher, a father and even an angel. How many actors can you think of who have been that diverse in their career? It just tears me up inside, Nicolas Cage ALWAYS thinks of other people before himself and what does he get for it? Memes. Goddamn memes. People do get annoyed in society when they can't stereotype people and Nicolas Cage is unique as unique can be... He is a true treasure and one of the last great people in this selfish world we live in. Of all the actors in the world, people have to bully one of the most kind, caring and honest actors ever to grace Hollywood and that is something I will never understand.

starsThank you Nicolas. Thank you for not letting Hollywood ruin what a pure and honest person you are.stars

Thank you for reading it biggrin Sean Penn did take back what he said, of sorts, in 2003 when Penn got his Oscar saying that Nicolas Cage gave one of the best performances of the year. But you are correct and what you said just made me amazing comment. Thank you again castle

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this entire article, Enzo. The bit about other actors criticizing Cage stuck with me since I read this article in which Sean Penn said that Nic "wasn't an actor, but a performer". Well, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't acting a type of performing? Anyway, brilliant article.

Hail Zarathos! flaming

It is a very good article, and I can only agree with, what you wrote! Nic has the same right, to choose his movies, he stars in, as the other actors in hollywood! And, that he is that diverse in his movies, makes him that uNIC performer, he is, and which, we as NICsters love about him!pinkp You did well with that one! Hope, she now understands better, why Nic is the best performer of our times! And, I wish, they would appreciate his generousity and charity work more!

flamingNOT APPRECIATED! disbeliefdisbeliefdisbelief bowsmileybowsmileyLet's just say, who can be amazed at the exceptional layers of film, or even, pie? The one who eats it!  starsmileThat's experience for a great movie as well. As far as one actor or producer judging another's work actionthat's as silly as an Artist confronting anothers Art. It doesn't happen. A Critic can say he is entertained, or not. Such as they say right now about, THOR. They love it, but, you certainly wouldn't ask them to make the next sequel, or wouldn't ask a 9th grade Home EC student to bake custard on their 1st day.

Nick once said he makes his movies as a work of love. Another comment as Art, and I believe him.

Here's what I may say about it all: As a tear will become a love letter, and that a song.

He is my favorite starry.  Look foreword to each productionbowsmiley  Life's  too short to listen to what the critics say. Just break the record & get a new song!

Make sense? The trick w/ food, art, movies- it's always meant to  impress somebody.

ENZO, if I knew how to make custard, I'd know if it is truly magnificent- or not.

Well put, Mylady! How could they dare to judge someone, without making it better! I agree, that only those, who are really familiar with this genre, and could understand, judge or critisize another artist! And, even then, I think, only Nic can judge fairly over his work!

I can only agree with what you wrote ! Nic can choose in what movie he want to be , it's his own right ! he does what he want , I can't understand why some people always say he does and choose bad movies , who are they to critisize ! And I think it's very disrespectful , he just want to entertain people and here is what he has in return , critics ! that's odd and unfair ! He must be appreciate for his talent he's THE man ! :)ILNCjoy

While it is disrespectful I feel that the critics only have his best intentions at heart. They keep saying, 'we want to see Nicolas in a serious drama again' and thats what they said for Frozen Ground and Joe. They said 'The Nicolas Cage we loved is back' they also said that for Bad Lieutenant! Lets hope for another Oscar!  But yes they should just leave him alone and appreciate him for who he is!!! castle

Hi Enzo and all here, I agree 100% to all you said Enzo about our MAN Nick Cage. He's is a true artist in what ever he does. That is why I'm a big fan and believer of all his films. He is a wonderful person as well it seems. I don't care at all about so call critics. I never read those much as most are put-downs on all stars. It seems that Nick gets the worse of it all the time. That's not fair at all. He is one of a kind actor who can do so many different roles. That makes him far different then the rest. Not many can pull off roles like Nick's. Or even play them like him.
In fact, right now I'm watching on my DVD "Trapped In Paradise". I love that film at this time of year and his other film for the holidays, "The Family Man". I do wish in a way he does more comedy some time in the near future. I do love all his other type of films he does too but comedy is something he can really pull off. He's a natural in all type of roles. He makes me smile while watching his films. Amen to that!
