Charlie Kaufman Confirms FRANK OR FRANCIS

Looks like we have confirmation on Frank Or Francis from Charlie kaufman!

Charlie Kaufman Says Zany, Outrageous ‘Frank Or Francis’ Is About “Online Film Criticism”

But “In The Broadest Possible Sense Only”; We’ve Read It And Have Details On This Wonderfully Ambitious & Bizarre Script

script-details-Charlie-Kaufman-Says-Frank-Or-Francis-Is-About-Online-Film-Criticism----But-Only-In-Broad-Terms.jpg
Screenwriter/director Charlie Kaufman is a busy man. After taking a detour to give a script polish on “Kung Fu Panda 2,” the writer behind “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” and the director of “Synecdoche, New York,” is back at it in full force. The filmmaker has two scripts in the can: one, an untitled political satire that his old co-hort Spike Jonze is going to direct starring Joaquin Phoenix, and another that Kaufman will once again get behind the camera for called “Frank or Francis.” We already know that it will star Nicolas Cage, Steve Carrell and Jack Black and that it’s a satire of Hollywood where a film director feuds with a blogger.

But it’s about oh-so-much more than that too. We’ve read the monumentally wacky and out-there script and Kaufman also recently described some of it in brief to Time Out London.

“In the broadest possible sense, it’s about online film criticism, but as usual, the world that I’m writing about is not necessarily the world that I’m writing about,” Kaufman tried to explain. “It’s just a place to set it. There’s a lot in there about the internet and anger: cultural, societal and individual anger. And isolation in this particular age we live in. And competition: it’s about the idea of people in this world wanting to be seen. I hate to use the word ‘about,’ as it implies that what I’m doing is an analogy and that I’m trying to say something. I’m not. That’s for the audience to do.”

It’s a wildly ambitious script and Kaufman says he doesn’t even know how he’s going to pull it off, but that’s because he doesn’t ever like to rein himself in during the writing stage.

“If I look at some of the things in the script that I’m about to embark on, I’d have to say I don’t really have any idea how we’re going to do it,” he said. “I’ve been pretty good at keeping logistics away from the writing process. It’s important when you’re writing to not bridle yourself with pragmatic concerns. The movie I’m about to do has got a lot of scenes and a lot of characters. And the scope of it and the world it inhabits is very, very large.”

It looks as though it's been officially confirmed AND, they are adding new actors to the mix.  Kevin Kline will also join the team!

Nic Cage, Jack Black And Steve Carell Confirmed For Frank Or Francis, Kevin Kline To Play Two Parts image

Just a little over an hour ago about the new Charlie Kaufman project Frank or Francis. While the story revealed the subject of the movie - online film critics - one key piece of information the story lacked was who will actually be starring in the movie. As I mentioned, Nicolas Cage, Jack Black and Steve Carell have had their names connected to the project, but it was unknown if they would actually be doing it. It turns out that they will be and another actor has joined them as well.

Variety reports that the three aforementioned actors are now all officially attached to star in Frank or Francis as is Kevin Kline, who will be playing two roles. The story revolves around Black's character, Francis -an "extremely intelligent Internet troll" - who takes pleasure in taking direct aim at a "successful, somewhat pretentious filmmaker" named Frank, played by Carell (who also happens to be cheating on his wife). Cage, who returns to Kaufman's work for the first time since 2002's Adaptation, plays a high profile actor named The Emcee who is known for making high concept films.

But here is where it gets weird: one of the characters that Kline plays is named Richard Waller, brother of Jonathan Waller, the filmmaker responsible for the most successful movie of all time. But while you may be thinking that Kline will play his own brother, you're dead wrong. Instead, the second role Kline will play a character called Richard's Head, "an animatronic head that, through the use of advanced screenwriting techniques, helps Jonathan develop a completely inoffensive product that will have the broadest possible appeal and zero artistic integrity." I'll wait while you let that soak in.

The casting process isn't over yet, as they are still looking for two actresses for singing parts (yes, there's apparently singing involved). Kaufman will be directing the film himself (only his second effort after 2008's Synecdoche, New York) and the project is scheduled to start production in January.

So Nic will play the Emcee, that is so interesting! I love this concept, it sounds so unusual and I can't wait to see some singing and dancing Nic.  This link here is mostly the same stuff, but it says it is a parody of Hollywood musicals, I don't think I have heard that before. Gonna be cool, I know that. And what a great cast, Kevin Kline, I love him!

WOW, excellent news my friends! thanks for posting the articles Gina and Lady T!flowerface

You are right, this is conformation both of the movie and of Nic starring. It is going to be such a compelling plot, us being part of the internet world, Nic being an actor.... so looking forward to this one! action

More of the same here from Variety:

Kevin Kline joins 'Frank or Francis'

Thesp attached for pair of supporting roles

The cast of Charlie Kaufman's sophomore feature "Frank or Francis" just got a little more interesting, as Kevin Kline is now attached to tackle not one but two supporting roles in the film, which is slated to star Jack Black, Steve Carell and Nicolas Cage.

A satire of Hollywood set to music, project chronicles the back-and-forth between a movie director and an online blogger who delights in berating his cinematic talent.

Black will play Francis, a charmless yet extremely intelligent Internet troll who reviews movies online.

Carell is in talks to play Frank, a successful, somewhat pretentious filmmaker who is cheating on his wife.

Cage will portray The Emcee, an actor famous for commercial, high-concept films including his most recent hit, "Fat Dad."

As for Kline, he'll play Richard Waller, the brother of Jonathan Waller, the director of a fictional film titled "Hiroshima," the highest-grossing movie of all-time. Kline will also play Richard's Head, an animatronic head that, through the use of advanced screenwriting techniques, helps Jonathan develop a completely inoffensive product that will have the broadest possible appeal and zero artistic integrity.

Likely Story's Anthony Bregman is producing the pic, which is skedded to begin lensing in January. WME is packaging the project and casting director Jeanne McCarthy is still working with Kaufman to cast two femme singing roles.

Kline most recently starred in Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" and Ivan Reitman's "No Strings Attached." Thesp recently wrapped Lawrence Kasdan's "Darling Companion," which also stars Diane Keaton, Richard Jenkins and Dianne Wiest.

Another Kaufman project with a dual role, this time for Kevin Kleine.

Nic as "an actor famous for commercial, high-concept films" I am so hoping there are going to be implicit levels of satire here!

The Playlist article says this about the Emcee:

'There’s then actually one more “lead” character,  Alan Modell (also known as the Emcee in the script due to his Oscar hosting duties), a comedian with a faltering career who is known for his wildly popular, immensely moronic “Fat Dad” roles (not dissimilar to “The Fatties” from “Tropic Thunder”).'

It gets more and more intiguing.

Ah! the pieces are falling into place..how exciting! I don't think it had registered that Nic's character is a comedic actor?

Good stuff Lula!  It's interesting how Kaufman may be mirroring Nic's character after comedian Eddie Murphy!

Well, it is happening, and it is currently in pre-production, and there is no official release-date, yet, but, let`s hope, they will film and finish it soon! So, we all still have to wait!
