I am sure this is the wrong forum but I felt like starting a Bad Lieutentant: POCNO appreciation thread since it is my current fave of Nic's. I feel his character as Terrance McDounah is in the Top 5 of Nic's work if not Top 3. The reasoning for this is because he takes his character arc to another level than he has before except for perhaps Peter Lowe in Vampire's Kiss and Charlie/Donald Kaufman in Adaptation. But I will say without a role like Ben Sanderson in Leaving Las Vegas or Eddie in Deadfall; Nic probably wouldn't have been able to pull off Terry in BL: POCNO because of how much he learned and grew as an actor in those parts. Peace, CLC.
Good for us to remember when we're going thru challenging times and wondering why we have to go thru them. We usually learn a lot and are wiser and stronger people, able to accomplish even more later! Thanks for the valuable insight!
Only just noticed this clc! cool idea for a thread and NICe to read your insights!
this film just keeps on growing on me..it works on so my levels and it is an incredivly hard balance to pull off so masterfully. Your comparison with Vampire's Kiss ( one of my absolute fave Nic movies ) resonated with me, because it had this unique almsot excrutiatingly delicious juxtaposition of ultra humour and disturbing darkness and it also toys with the concept of genre. The Bad Lieutenant, for me, walks a simliar knife edge, and has the same character ambiguity, a character who on the one hand you cannot sympathise with ( in terms of some of his actions ) and yet to whom you are extremely sympathetic as the foundations of his motivations rumble underneath. It is also completely bizarre in places and liberatingly hilarious.
Nicolas did an interview with a representative from Fangoria Magazine and stated that the difference between Peter Lowe in Vampire's Kiss and Terrance McDounah in BL:POCNO is that Peter is crazy and Terrance is simply on drugs. Nicolas sees a simiarity between the two characters however but are different at the same time.
What I noticed for me, in watching BL:POCNO was, for the first time watching it, it was extremely hard to watch and digest.
I was really surprised and a rarity for me that I felt that way in viewing a Nic movie because heck, I'll watch him stare at a tomato for 2 hours and still come out of it excited!!!
The second time I watched it, I felt a bit more at ease, even laughing during moments when I'm not sure it warranted a laugh due to the serious tone and nature of the movie, but due to the shear NICASTIC (Nic/fantastic) acting and adrenaline, my eyes were glued.
I also think he and Eva have amazing chemistry on screen together.

I missed that interiew I think! So thanks clc, that is intriguing to hear! that isof course completely true...and both charactors give him the opportunity as an actor to perform with a more expressionistic style, to play a little bit further outside the boundaries. For me he does truly bring many levels to both characters (and hence the film) and I particularly mentioned the humour / darkness balance because tha tis how i feel upon watching both!
I agree with everything stated above and feel that Nicolas is at his best playing at multiple levels of his character which provides more arc to the film and mood. Nic does dark comedies the best in my view since he can pull from a multitude of emotions and directions within his character. Even tho Nic borrowed from Brando and was Chaplain esque in his movements at certain scenes in Vampire's Kiss, it was still completely his own. Also, Christian Bale stole from Nicolas in his part for American Psycho. CLC
Yes, your`re right. Nic has really great chemistry with his female co-stars. And, of course with all the other actors, too.
I think, in every role he plays, he adds just the right measure to his delivery of acting, so that his characters are really believable. He is really the greatest actor in the world, with such an huge imagination and tremendous skills!
Really brilliant!

Great feedback folks and I am glad you all enjoy BL:POCNO as much as I do. I don't think Nic went over the top at all at Terrance merely because he was on various forms of pain killers and controlled substances......so his actions were a bit off but still were calculated since he was aware of his surroundings and was still able to complete the case in the end. On a side note, I wish Nicolas would of asked the director Neil Lebute to make the Wicker Man remake an over the top comedy in the vein of Monty Python....would of been classic. I digress however. You know, I know Wicker Man has become this cult dramedy but it really wasn't that bad.
The only part I laughed at that I'm sure wasn't meant to be funny was when Nic punched LeeLee Sobieski. I thought - What?! LOL!!!
Oh, I digress too!
But, there's this one scene in BL: POC. I love how he says:
"I'm working on gettng your money Dave. That's what I'm doing here."
Nic delivers this quick line, so non-chalantly AND, with a quirky, sincere, and hilarious smile on his face - CLASSIC NIC CAGE ACTING AT HIS BEST! The line comes in around the 3:13 mark of this clip. This clip also demonstrates what I meant when I spoke of "exuberant drama."

Exuberant drama is a great way to describe it, Gina. Bad Lieutenant is one of my favourite of Nic's movies. I waited impatiently for it and it was well worth the wait too, a superb and astounding performance to me.
I believe that BL:POCNO is Nicolas' second greatest performance next to Vampire's Kiss. If you noticed I didn't say best acting performance but simply performance. I know Sean Penn (who is a hack and takes only "Oscar" worthy roles) stated Nic is only a performer now instead of actor. But I feel that acting is indeed a performance of Art and some Hollywood actors take their roles too serious and am glad Nic isn't one of them. I am glad Nic can ham it up and do what he pleases to mess with people because I think he does what he wants and doesn't care what his peers think. He is a real Maverick of his era and I also would like to see him work in a film with the likes of Denzel or Robert De Niro or Ray Liotta. CLC
