Posting for interest for any of our members building a Nic Blu-ray collection!
Honeymoon In Vegas is a fantastNIC comedy romance, with Nic at his pent up kinetic Cage best and worthy of it's place in the Nicolas Cage library of works. The blu-ray looks like it only has the theatrical trailer as an extra though !
Here is a detailed review:
THE FILM: HONEYMOON IN VEGAS hit at an interesting time for most of the major players involved. Director Andrew Bergman’s previous film was the hugely successful comedy THE FRESHMAN with Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando. Sarah Jessica Parker had just started cementing her big screen comedic reputation with the wonderful L.A. STORY the previous year. And Nicholas Cage was still considered a serious actor. In fact, this film is the beginning of a string of well regarded mid-level comedies he would headline leading up to his Oscar winning turn in 1995’s harrowing LEAVING LAS VEGAS.
For those that haven’t seen it, HONEYMOON IN VEGAS follows marriage shy private investigator Jack Singer (Cage) as he finally takes the plunge sweeping the love of his life, Betsy (Parker) to Vegas to get hitched. As soon as they get there, gangster Tommy Korman (James Caan) sees Betsy, who is a look-a-like of his dead wife, and immediately sets into motion plans to woo her away from Singer. A rigged card game later and Korman and Betsy are off to Hawaii with Jack in hot pursuit.
The film has aged pretty well. Not great mind you. Not like a fine wine but more like a good car. It’s not as fast and flashy as the newer models but it does what it was made to do and gets you from point A to point B. The characters are a bit dated (particularly Parker’s object of both men’s affection), the situations are a bit hokey (the whole storyline of Pat Morita’s taxi driver is a bit too over-the-top) and the resolution is cheesy (but in a memorably funny way.
Nearly twenty years on, HONEYMOON IN VEGAS still delivers the laughs, and has enough quirky bits (the whole Elvis theme) and some great cameos (an early Tony Shalhoub appearance, the great Peter Boyle and Anne Bancroft) to make it worth checking out. But if you already have the DVD, is this worth the upgrade to Blu-ray?
THE DISC: The film is presented in an anamorphic 1.85. The colors are decent, if not a little on the dull side. The source print is only in fair shape with speckles and minor debris popping up here and there but never enough to call attention or distract from the film. What is noticeable is the amazing amount of film grain visible through out the film. It does lighten up but the opening scenes in particular look overly grainy. I thought this may be the original look of the film and my mind just sharpened it up over the years, but the original theatrical trailer on the Blu-ray looks much brighter and sharper than the film itself.
The DTS-Master Audio 2.0 soundtrack is serviceable. It is a clean track with clear dialogue and music but it is a twenty year old soundtrack.
THE EXTRAS: Just the aforementioned theatrical trailer.
MY SAY: HONEYMOON IN VEGAS is still a fun little film. A bit dated but very enjoyable. The print on this disc, however, could have used a little cleaning and since the film isn’t a classic or monster best seller it is doubtful a restoration or special edition will ever be in the works.
