Hi all! As you  know Drive Angry is released on dvd very very soon!bouncyfrog

if you come across and cool reviews or would like to give one of your own, post them in this thread!action

This is an interesting read and overall great review, i am not sure i am that keen on how the reviewer compliments Nic on his acting, but he compliments him nevertheless and i could not agree more with this:

"he turns John Milton into one of those iconic bad/good guys, an antihero who can wow them with his shooting skills or seduce them with a single sloppy kiss. Cage delivers every one of his lines with the defeated perfection of a doomed champion. He knows he will die trying to make things right, but he’s not afraid of that fate. In fact, he accepts it with a ridiculous amount of quiet relish.."

( Apart from  "sloppy kiss". i would never call that sloppy lips)

Yes, it is a good review overall, but his stupid comments about Nic's role choices make me want to kick him in the b****, actually. I am getting really SICK of these critics going on about Nic the paycheck actor, blah, blah, blah, wish they would just shut the f*** up sometimes.

rant over.

I know, and it was worth reading, but I have got to the point now where I don't even click on the link for a look at the reviews, I find them so uninspiring.

We await your review Lady True! I know it will ienspiratioonal! starry

The end sentence on this intrigued me:

http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/this-week-in-blu-ray-may-31-2011.php

"Drive Angry 3D

I am yet to really cross over and become a supporter of 3D Blu-ray titles, but seeing Nic Cage blast his way out of hell and into the cult-stricken world of the deep south, killing rampantly along the way has brought me one step closer to being a true believer. In one of his most excessive, yet seemingly calculated roles to date, Cage plays Milton, an undead felon who comes back to avenge the death of his daughter at the hands of a silk-shirted cult leader (Billy Burke) and save his baby granddaughter. Along the way there are explosions (awesome ones), gun fights (excessive in nature) and copious third-dimension nudity. Also, Amber Heard stars as Piper, a rough-and-tumble sidekick with an affinity for tiny jean shorts. The big winner in this set is the ‘Access: Drive Angry’ feature, an interactive series of video commentary, kill-counters and factoids that play along with the film (when activated. The commentary from writer Todd Farmer and writer/director Patrick Lussier is reason enough to own this one. Did you know that the Piper character was basically Todd Farmer writing himself as a hot chick? Brilliant."

But, this from Latino review aces it!

Wait, wasn't Nicolas Cage just in a movie? Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot who I was writing about. I've said it many times before, I can forgive Cage for making so many bad movies, because more often than not, he makes solid, entertaining films. Forget the National Treasures and the Ghost Riders, small gems like Matchstick Men and Bad Lieutenant are the types of unconventional flicks most name actors wouldn't have the confidence to sign up for. You've gotta give Cage credit as well. Hit or miss, the guy's a bold risk taker, the kind of actor whose willing to bet his career just to be experimental and have a little fun in the process. At this point, I think it's safe to say Cage has reached a peak where his career is safe no matter what he does. And that makes him even more dangerous.

I can see why Cage signed up for Drive Angry, the latest collaboration between director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer. Two years ago, Lussier and Farmer scored a home run with My Bloody Valentine, a horror remake which aimed directly at its audience in more ways than one. The film was not only one of the first out the gate in the current 3D wave, but was designed to let its viewers in on the joke that it was a cliché filled piece where even the actors knew exactly what they were getting into. Drive Angry has a few elements of horror, but it's also a throwback to the exploitation films of the 70's with a focus on action, attitude and speed. Both Lussier, who cut his teeth as an editor for Wes Craven before directing DTV sequels to his theatrical debut Dracula 2000 and Farmer who wrote the surprisingly clever and inventive Jason X, appear to have a knack for mixing genres, which is probably why Cage signed up for Drive Angry with great enthusiasm.

drive-cage-first

With incredible gusto, Cage takes on the familiar role of drifter-on-a-mission, as prison escapee John Milton, a guy who when we first meet him, is chasing down a trio of thugs in his muscle car, looking for answers. Details aren't immediately clear, but he has no qualms blowing off body parts with his trusty shotgun and the screams of his victims fall on unsympathetic ears. Needing a ride to Louisiana, he crosses paths with Piper (Amber Heard) a waitress who's just quit a job at a roadside diner after her boss has groped her one too many times. After he comes to her aid in an altercation with her cheating boyfriend (played hilariously by Farmer), Piper offers Milton a lift and before long trouble comes looking for both of them. Milton is on the hunt for cult leader Jonah King (Billy Burke) who hopes to gain some form of satanic power after sacrificing a newborn infant during the next full moon. That baby happens to be the child of Milton's estranged daughter, who got mixed up in King's cult after he was jailed and was later murdered by the satanist. Milton knows all the details involved because he saw “the video feed” in prison.

drive-heard-car

And what kind of prison is this you ask? Well, Milton has recently escaped from hell itself and after being dead for several years is out to rescue his granddaughter and exact his revenge upon King. Of course with every prison break there follows a pursuit and hot on Milton's trail is “The Accountant”, an even tempered, slick suited cop for Satan played to perfection by William Fichtner. Fichtner has played the similar role of pursuer, as FBI agent turned felon on TV's Prison Break, but “The Accountant” is far more deadlier and interesting. In his performance, Fichtner “cuts to the chase” so to speak, proving to be an unstoppable force that will charge through anything to achieve his goal. He's not an emotionless robot from the future and there's no sense of glee or satisfaction in what he does. He's just a man determined to carry out his assignment and even has the power to impersonate an FBI agent and corrupt a pair of dim-witted state troopers into assisting him.

drive-fichtner-accountant

King proves to be quite a match for Milton as well, displaying confidence that he'll succeed in his goals and commanding several followers who share his vision. Burke is an actor I've seen on mostly television for quite a number of years – you might remember him as the abusive husband Alisha Cuthbert babysat for in the second season of 24 – before he landed the role most audiences know him for, Bella's dad Sheriff Charlie in the Twilight films. He's rarely been given strong roles or even that of a villain and has made the character of King his own. The guy's real slime, an opportunist and manipulator who believes in himself and will use just about anyone to achieve what he wants. The fact that the seemingly unkillable father of a girl he murdered has come back from hell to destroy him doesn't appear to frighten King or cause him to waver from his goals. He even has the nerve to taunt Milton with a walking stick whose handle happens to be made from his dead daughter's femur bone.

drive-burke-king

With Milton, Cage is given a larger than life role, yet he wisely underplays it. He rarely engages in outrageous behavior or antics that lead you to believe he might wink at the audience any moment and it demonstrates his confidence in the strength of the material. He also lends a great deal of the spotlight to Heard, who make Piper a wildcat and spitfire of emotions. In a physical confrontation with men obviously stronger than her, Piper is still determined to get in a few licks, even if it costs her a few teeth. With Milton suffering from angst and regret over losing his daughter, Piper also shares some of the emotional weight of the story as well as Webster (David Morse), an old partner who used to run with Milton and feels he owes the man for looking out for him so many years before.

drive-cage_rideem

In addition to some wonderful performances, Drive Angry features a number of inventive car chases as well as an outrageous sex scene that has to be seen to be believed. Some may compare Cage dispatching various attackers while having sex with bar waitress Charlotte Ross to a similar shootout involving Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci in Shoot Em Up. But Drive Angry's sequence is more playful and humorous, making clever use of the 3D process.

Drive Angry
is a pretty fun movie with a forward momentum and a solid story that never seems to have a dull moment. It's to Lussier and Farmer's credit, that they keep things moving right along, never getting too much into detail, like why Milton went to hell, how he got out or managed to bring with him a nifty weapon called “the Godslayer”. His pursuit and the characters involved are what keep the film interesting, making it one hell of a ride.

drive-cage-milton

Video:
The blu-ray edition of Drive Angry is reference material in my opinion; both the 3D and 2D discs. Having worked with 3D technology on My Bloody Valentine, Lussier, seems quite familiar with what works and what doesn't. The 3D gags don't feel forced and at times the process doesn't feel intrusive or taxing on your eyes. Lussier's less-is-more approach is something other fimmakers choosing to shoot in 3D should consider.

Like the 3D disc, the 2D blu-ray also included features an exceptional transfer the represents the best of what digital photography has to offer. You can truly get a sense of the crisp clarity the technology can present with the 2D version, which enables you to pick up all the minor details like the texture of Cage's skin or the fine hairs on Heard's forearm. Black levels are strong, but the flesh tones are absolutely perfect. This MPEG-4 presentation framed in the 1.78 to 1 aspect ratio is another winner from Summit.

drive-heard-gun

Audio:
Loud and angry is the simplest way I can describe the disc's DTS MA 5.1 track which delivers high octane excitement. In essence, this track is truly a blast, with music and sound effects mixed perfectly into the 5.1 configuration. They don't overwhelm the dialogue either, which is of great clarity and is pretty audible during even the most loud action sequences. Definitely a work out for your home theater system.

Extras:
I was a little saddened that there are so few extras on a title with such a great audio and video presentations (not even a DVD or Digital Copy) and even though what we do get is sparse, its better than nothing. Lussier and Farmer provide a pretty decent where they discuss how they approached shooting the film in 3D, including the technical aspects of doing so with cars in action sequences. They also get into the aspects of the story, Cage's performance and the level of violence in the film. Not a particularly engaging track, since Lussier appears to be suffering from laryngitis, but they do get the job done.

Deleted Scenes
(HD, 1:36 mins): Two are presented with optional commentary: “You Made Me Cheat” and “Morgan Girl”.

Access: Drive Angry
: A nifty Picture-in-Picture feature that enables you to "track Milton's mayhem, view interviews with the cast and filmmakers, and enjoy trivia and facts" during disc playback. Some may grow tiresome of the occasional extras the pop up and to be honest, this feature wears out its welcome pretty fast.

I think this movie in video is doing very well, I base that on the fact that it is never in when I go to the video store, and it sold out the day it went on sale! The reviews seem more positive now too.

They are both pretty good reviews, the second one quite interesting to read for the detail. I like that they both appreciate Nic's performance and don't dismiss it as some critics do, saying he walked through it. Odd how some people complain that Nic is a chewing up the scenery actor, as they call it, yet they don't like it when he is more subdued, they call him boring. Which is something I don't think Nic is capable of being on screen, not to me anyway. I personally find his quiet intensity in this movie very compelling.

Thanks for posting, Lula.

You are welcome Lady Trueheart and i couldn't agree more with your comments about the contradiction, and inaccuracy of the critics...

They are in the top ten Nicolas Cage Myths! action

Not that the movie needs any defence as far as I'm concerned, but a pretty good review overall.

http://www.ifc.com/news/2011/06/in-defense-of-drive-angry.php

In Defense of "Drive Angry"

Why you should watch one of the biggest flops of the year on Blu-ray or DVD.

Photo: "Drive Angry," Summit Entertainment, 2011.

Like a movie about a firefighter killing terrorists right after 9/11, or a movie called "Looters" right after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, "Drive Angry" was a victim of bad timing. Sold primarily as a 3D movie right as audiences began to tire of 3D ("SHOT IN 3D!" the trailers probably shouldn't have boasted), on the backend of a wave of cruddy Nicolas Cage movies, it basically had no chance at the box office. And with just over $10 million in domestic receipts in the box office, less than half of Cage's January release "Season of the Witch," that's exactly what it got.

I understand why people stayed away, but I'm here to tell you, "Drive Angry" is well worth a Friday night rental. It's a saucy little exploitation picture, with a feisty, well-cast Cage as a man possessed. Remember when Nicolas Cage was the guy who played the awkward everyman nerd in action movies? And he sometimes needed Sean Connery to show him how to kick ass? Yeah, those days are long gone. Now a murdering, muscle car driving avenger from hell is about as close to an everyman as he gets. And we love him for it! Who cares if he's 47 and slightly jowly? Who cares if his hair looks like it's made from the stuff they sweep off the floor of the American Girl Doll Hair Salon? The man is having so much fun in this movie it's infectious.

Cage plays John Milton, a dead man who escapes from Hell on a mission of revenge; that Cage's character shares a name with the author of "Paradise Lost" and likes to shoot people while he's having (fully clothed) intercourse with a barmaid, gives you a good indication of the movie's intelligence level and temperament. Milton's pursued by the always dependable "that guy" William Fichtner, in the leading role of a lifetime of supporting turns as The Accountant, a relentless agent of the underworld sent to return Milton to his rightful place in eternal damnation. I won't spoil just what Milton is doing back on planet Earth, but it involves Billy Burke's Jonah King, a religious leader who must be a bad guy because a)he walks around with a cane made out of a dead girl's femur and b)he has a soul patch. I don't know which one's worse.

"Drive Angry"'s plot has more holes than the grill of Milton's Chevrolet Chevelle. Honestly? Who cares. The film is ludicrous and proud. Milton's sidekick is the fetching Amber Heard, whose impossibly luxurious mane of flaxen hair maintains its shine and bounce in even the fiercest of gunfights. His nemesis casually tosses off lines like "It'd be bloody easy for me to shoot you in the throat and watch you gurgle while I eat my morning grapefruit." And since it was shot in 3D there's all sorts of shrapnel and bullets and spittle flying at the camera lens, even though most people will watch this movie at home in 2D (there is a 3D Blu-ray, if your home theater is equipped to handle such a thing).

I actually like the movie with 2D 3D effects. They remind me of all the schlocky formerly 3D exploitation pictures I used to watch on VHS as a kid. Releasing a 3D film in 2D strips it bare of any artistic pretense -- these are carnival rides, plain and simple, and some of the attractions aren't even working right now, so just stay in your seats until your car comes to a full and a complete stop. It also lends them a literal in-your-face attitude. A little aggressiveness is never a bad thing in an action movie.

With its gritty driving sequences, vindictive demons, and hellfire-spewing guns, "Drive Angry" is a way more satisfying adaptation of the "Ghost Rider" comic book than the "Ghost Rider" movie that Nicolas Cage was also the star of. In that case, he was required to tamp down a little bit of that Cage craziness we know and love to try to fit our notions of a super-hero. As Milton, he has noble intentions, but he's also a bloodthirsty killer out for revenge. And without spoiling too much, that gives him license to do stuff like drink beer out of a dead guy's skull. If that's not your idea of a good night at home with a rented movie and some popcorn, then we have nothing left to discuss. Good night and drive safely (and angry).

At last, I finally got the 2d version of it at Wal-mart yesterday for just ten bucks, and I just got to watch it last night, but I think Milton has already become one of my top favorite Nic characters of all time. I also really enjoyed William Fichtner's perfomance as the Accountant. I had previously just seen Fichtner in Drowning Mona after hearing that he was going to be in Drive Angry and I was eager to see what he could pull off when he was really able to let loose, so now I might just have to check out more of his work!

DRIVE ANGRY Blu-ray Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted:June 16th, 2011 at 7:08 am

  stumble_custom.jpg

drive-angry-3d-movie-image-amber-heard-nicolas-cage-slice-01

There is an art to camp.  It’s not enough to simply have the director wink to the audience and say “Yeah, we know this is terrible, but we’re having dumb fun so laugh god-dammit.“  Just because you’re making something trashy, doesn’t mean you have the license to give up quality filmmaking.  Director Patrick Lussier understands the difference between trashy filmmaking and trashy fun and that’s the reason his film Drive Angry is such a delight.  The script is unapologetically dumb, everything is cranked up to 11, and while everyone is clearly having a good time, no one is slacking off.  That’s the art to Drive Angry and it’s why it will likely build a devoted cult following in the years to come.

John Milton (Nicolas Cage) has broken out of hell to avenge his daughter’s death at the hands of Satanic cult leader Jonah King (Billy Burke).  Milton must also save his granddaughter before King spills the infant’s blood at the full moon and brings on the apocalypse.  On his journey, Milton saves tough chick Piper (Amber Heard) who decides to tag along, but he’s also being hunted by The Accountant (William Fichtner) who is determined to bring Milton back to hell.  Along the way, there’s a lot of blood, a lot of breasts, a lot of carnage, and a hell of a good time.

The tragedy of Nicolas Cage is that he can’t give up his dream of being an action star.  His best performances of the last decade haven’t been blockbusters, but character dramas that encourage him to, you know, act.  The expectation with Drive Angry is that Cage will pull a Wicker Man and go way over the top.  But Cage understands that in a movie where cheap CGI is flying out of the screen (Drive Angry was originally released in 3D) plus gore-n-boobs a-plenty, he needs to just be the grizzled, man-on-a-mission center.

He leaves the theatrics to Fichtner who gives a performance that would make Christopher Walken proud.  Fichtner chews the scenery, punctuates his lines with bizarre syllabic emphasis and pauses, knows he’s cooler than everyone else on screen, and carries himself as you would expect an indestructible bureaucrat of hell to behave.  The Accountant is bored by humanity, but the bravado and silliness Fichtner brings to the role makes you itch to see another scene featuring The Accountant.

drive_angry_3d_image_02.jpg

And while “tough gal” roles are a dime a dozen and usually rely too heavily on sex and end up failing to sell the character’s strength, Heard gets the right balance.  She’s sexy as hell in Drive Angry but she’s feisty and not in a contrived way.  When her ex-boyfriend punches her in the face after she tries to leave him, she’s on the ground with blood coming out of her mouth and nose and what does she do?  She laughs back in his face (she also gets in a few good hits herself).  While the film does rely heavily on Milton having to save her, Piper never comes off as truly helpless and she seems willing to fight and until the death.

When you have three strong performances at the center of the film (four if you count Billy Burke’s campy villainy), then there’s a foundation to build a truly ridiculous film.  If the performers are invested in their characters, then we’re invested, and the movie can throw as much ridiculous crap at us as it wants because it’s anchored.  From there, Lussier is free to have scenes where Nicolas Cage simultaneously has a gun fight and ****s a big-fake-tittied waitress.  We can enjoy a scene where Fichtner walks in on one of Jonah’s cult members who’s kneecaps have been blown apart and exclaim, “Whoa!  Those are ****ed!”  We welcome Katy Mixon acting like the world’s sluttiest waitress when Cage enters her diner because we know we’re going over the top and if you’re going over the top, it’s go big or go home.  Drive Angry goes as big as it can on the budget it has and accomplishes what it sets out to do.

drive_angry_3d_image_04.jpg

There are plenty of bad action movies that try to pretend like they wanted to be terrible all along and that’s why no one put in any effort.  There are also plenty of awful Nicolas Cage action films.  Drive Angry is neither, but I understand why folks would have that perception and that’s why it tanked attheboxoffice.  But now the film is out on Blu-ray and it’s a big bag of trashy fun that deserves to be on your shelf.

The visuals look gorgeous to the point where it almost works against the movie.  Every piece of crummy CG that flies towards the screen is pristine and somehow looks even faker than it did when I saw it in 3D.  But Drive Angry has a colorful palette that really comes alive and Summit has done an outstanding job on this transfer.  The audio is equally impressive with a mix that will give your speakers a workout while still doing a great job delivering dialogue and the brief moments when something isn’t being fired or exploded.  However, the special features are a little weak.  There’s a serviceable commentary from Lussier (fighting through laryngitis) and co-writer Todd Farmer, but it’s not a must-hear track.  There are a couple of fun deleted scenes with optional commentary, and then there’s the “Access: Drive Angry” track which pops-up interviews, trivia, and neatest of all, track Milton’s bodycount.  That one I particularly enjoyed.

Rating: B+

That is a good one. Enjoyed reading it.  Makes me laugh when they decide what Nic's problem is though, lol!

'The tragedy of Nicolas Cage is that he can’t give up his dream of being an action star.'

I mean, please! What a dumb thing to say. Wonder if they have any idea what they are saying or just looking for a sentence that rolls well.

lol! I think the latter Meg, and Nic makes an awesome action star as much as he makes an awesome dramatic actor or fantasy actor or whatever, this quality versatility, that is his strength! i think i read an equally glowing review as this one for Drive Angry praising The Rock, Face Off  and ConAir from the same site.........so....... highly successful as an action star i should say....i would hate it if Nic never plucked that particular string in his bow again!bouncyfrog

Talking of which..and possibly off topic-ish (apologies) I read Simon West is to direct Exendables 2. Now when are they gonna invite Nic to the party?!!!!!!!! action

I read that too, and Nic immediately popped into my mind, it would be awesome to see him do it! Although I hope it would be better than the first one, which was not my cup of tea at all. Still, Simon West has gotta do better than Sly, right? I am just really sick of the stereotypical female representation in most action movies, is there no other role for a woman than damsel in distress or sex pot, or a combination of both.

Would you see Nic as hero or villain in an Expendables 2?

I have not seen the first one yet Lady True *makes mental note to do so* but when I read about it and that they had gathered together the major action stars of the 80's.... without Nic.... well.......................

I agree about the representation of women in action, that is another reason why I like Drive Angry very much....Piper! starry

I think you wil have anticipated this answer about whether Nic should play hero or villain....i think one of Nics' many strengths as an actor or an aspect of the characters he has played that i enjoy, is he is not just capable of portraying a hero or villain equally brilliantly, but that he does conflicted so well.... and playing in the different levels and grey areas within the same character.. It would be cool to have hero and villain in one character, and he is the man for that job. Milton is a classic example I guess. I don't know why but Snake Eyes comes to mind, not as an action movie but one where Nic's character is very interesting indeed in terms of the hero to villain spectrum! action

Another rave review for Drive Angry!

"In Drive Angry writer Todd Farmer and director Patrick Lussier have crafted THE rock and roll action movie of the year."

Blu-ray Review: Drive Angry

DRIVE ANGRY

Stars: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke, David Morse, Tom Atkins | Written by Patrick Lussier, Todd Farmer | Directed by Patrick Lussier

Milton (Cage), a hardened felon, has broken out of Hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon. He’s joined by Piper (Heard), a young, sexy waitress, who liberates her boyfriend’s cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah (Burke), who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash Hell on Earth. But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton’s problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer known only as The Accountant (Fichtner) has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to Hell.

Forgive me for using the official synopsis for Drive Angry but when it came time for me to type out the synopsis all that poured out was a stream of Fuck Yeah! Awesome! Badass! Yeah! and Woo-Hoo’s over and over and over. As if it isn’t clear from that, let me spell it out for you, I L-O-V-E-D Drive Angry, more than a grown man should love any movie.

So what’s to love about the film? Well, for one, this is the PERFECT vehicle (pardon the pun) for the craziness that is Nicolas Cage, in fact Drive Angry is so over the top and completely bonkers that it makes Cage look moderately sane for once! It’s almost as if the role of Milton was written for Cage (possibly?), I really can’t see anyone else fulling the role with as much gusto, or complete badass-ery, as Cage. Luckily for us Cage has the perfect companion in Amber Heard, who brings the right mix of strong independent woman and fragile lonely girl to her portrayal of abused waitress Piper. William Fichtner, as “the accountant”, gives another strong scene stealing performance, managing to hold his own against Cage in the scenes they have together; on some occasions he even seems to be channeling Robert Patrick in Terminator 2 – particularly in some of the action set pieces, at other times Fichtner is just being “Fichtner”, bringing the same authoritative (if slightly OTT) bravado he did to his roles in Prison Break and, dare I say it, Blades of Glory.

Speaking of action set pieces… Wow. Seriously. Wow. Where to start? Muscle-car chases a plenty, a ridiculous tanker sequence (that is spoilt by the trailer dammit!), life-threatening car crashes, fist fights and arse-kickings by the bucketload and a huge explosive (literally) set piece to top the film off – it’s like manna for action movie fans – of which I am most definitely one. Director Patrick Lussier doesn’t skip on the gore either, he’s brings the same ridiculous OTT gore sequences to Drive Angry as he did to My Bloody Valentine 3D, and no doubt the films scribe Todd Farmer was responsible for a few gory ideas too, having previously penned My Bloody Valentine 3D and Jason X – I’d even go as far as saying that the gory deaths in Drive Angry wouldn’t look out of place in a Friday the 13th movie!

I make no apologies for the gushing praise I’ve heaped on the film, and I stand by my every word. In Drive Angry writer Todd Farmer and director Patrick Lussier have crafted THE rock and roll action movie of the year.
