Nic's Film Choices 2011 and Beyond

Hey fellow Nic Fans:  I am new to these boards, but come here every day to check on Nic news and tidbits.  I also have posted on Cagefactor when it was still up.  I am a huge fan of Nic's like the rest of you, but sometimes wish he never ran into financial issues because I think he would have the option of choosing his roles instead of taking anything that comes his way.  I hope he turns down the Treasure of Pompeii engine because I feel it is too close to the NT series.....even if he played a baddie.  I also miss the comedies he used to do in his younger years and believe he could of been a comic genius like his doppelganger Gene Wilder.  Nic doesn't seem focused on his character/method acting anymore, but that could be due to feeling comfortable in his skin and what he is capable of.  I just know he likes to be challenged in his roles and the best is brought out of him when that is the case.  This is just my opinon, but I sometimes feel that Nic trumps the films he is and sometimes he seems bigger than the work itself.  I sometimes feel that Nic engulfs the film instead of the film engulfing Nic....as in he seems bored.  Anyway,  I just wanted to say hello to my fellow Nic fans and hope the next few years bring us great Nic films.  BTW: Nic deserved an Oscar for BL:POCNO.  Cheers.

Hi clcdmb, welcome to the forum, and thanks for posting. It is good to know who some of those ghostly visitors lurking around here are!

I read with interest what you had to say about Nic and his roles, and some of it I do agree with. I am especially happy to agree with you about BL: POCNO, I feel the same way, it was a role that definitely did not get the attention it deserved. A real tour de force.

And yes, I would agree with you that he trumps some of his movies, he is always an artist, but there isn't always a script and director who can match him. But it does not follow to me that he seems bored, I never get that feeling. In fact, just the opposite, he seems to genuinely give it his all and believe in his movies. I like that a lot, I would hate it if I thought he walked through any of his roles.

I expect you are right in this statement too... Nic doesn't seem focused on his character/method acting anymore, but that could be due to feeling comfortable in his skin and what he is capable of... though I would qualify that to say...as focused.

You know, even before Nic's  financial dealings became public, he was always a workaholic,  I think he is an artist who must keep creating. My opinion.

Hope you feel like posting some more here, would love to hear more of your thoughts, and yes, here's to more great Nic films!

Meg

Welcome to the forum clcdmb, I am glad you took the leap to join us, it is great to meet one of our many visitors! welcome1

Thank you for starting an interesting discussion, and sharing your opinion! My feeling on the Pompei thing is firstly not to begin thinking about it too much until there is an official announcemnet (unless I missed that) I kind of feel I would judge the film on it's own merits before deciding anything about it, but I would be gutted, and possibly have a little sulk, if it was instead of National Treaure 3... I am very fond of those characters and enjoy their adventures together, Diane Kruger mentioned tome herself on Twitter that it was happening but now things seem to be in total silence over the movie! action

As for Nic's movie choices, I can't make any assumptions about that, my feeling is he has always follows his own integrity in making choices in order to be congruent in his performances and keep interested. the fact that some of his choices don't appeal to people has resulted in him being criticized for making bad choices and often his financial situation cited as the reason...well, to me that's just creating a fiction, of course he works for money who doesnt but if someone doesn't like his movie choice, or the movie, then surely that's their own taste! Also it seems some people want him stuck in one particular groove...and if he ventures from it, it is a bad choice..but for whom? i am lucky i have eclectic tastes so his eclectic choices appeal to me greatly!starry

I am not entirely sure what you are meaning about him not being into the method acting any more, i think he experiments and that involves a range of palettes... and yes, he is a character actor, he create the character from the inside, i don't see a dilution of that. also not clear on what you mean in your last paragraph... it seems contradictory that he would both trump the film and be bored?

folk are probably p'd off me keep pointing to this, but it saves me repeating, here is something i wrote about Mr Cage if you are interested clc!

Welcome again and thanks for starting a cool discussion!

I agree that he is still a great character actor; hince his look in Drive Angry and he seems to have been changing his look more lately w/ facial hair and eye color as opposed to being clean shaven mostly in the 90's. Maybe it is because I am such a big fan, but sometimes I feel that his larger than life status seem to trump the films he is in.  I know that doesn't make sense to some people, but when Nic works on films w/ other actors of his caliber, the best is brought out of everyone.......like in Bringing Out the Dead or 8mm.  I also would like Nic to play supporting roles at times and see how he would fare not being the lead.  I think he wasn't used enough as a supporting actor in Kick-Ass either.  Also,  I kind of have a gripe w/ his films always coming out to the theaters.  Other Oscar winning actors like Russ Crowe have had straight to dvd films.  Films like SOTW don't deserve to come out to the cinema in my opinon and I am a huge fan of Nic's, but some films are dvd only.  I also would like to see Nic play more villain roles.......he should of stayed the real bad Castor Troy in Face/Off.  Travolta looked silly trying to have Nic's smoothe bad guy walk....he looked like he had a bad back.....anyway, I will chat w/ you all later when I get off work.  Cheers.

I hope I didn't offend my fellow Nic fans on these boards by my passionate views on Nic's career choices and films as of late.  I just am an avid fan like I am of the Dallas Cowboys and Dave Matthews Band.  I find myself comparing him to his peers even though that is unfair, but I feel there are only a few of his peers that can do what he does.  Not many can do comedy, action, drama and beyond, but Nic can.  I struggle w/ the fact that Nic will quit acting someday and I am not sure who I will choose as my favorite actor for years to come.  These young actors now seem like cookie cutter clones.  My other favorite actors besides Nicolas are: Matt Damon, Ben Foster, Val Kilmer (early work) and Jermey Renner.  I wish Heath Ledger was still alive cause' I felt he was brilliant.  Anyway, I was wondering if the backround on the boards will get changed to Drive Angry when that is close to coming out.  Later Nicsters.

My silence to your last reply was a huh Why would a Nic fan want Nic films not to be shown at cinemas?

Lol, well we have been talking about changing it, but maybe we'll keep this backgound as it is forever now! rolllaugh
