Christmas time seems to bring the magic out in people, and for me I'm suddenly drawn even deeper into this timeless zone of the imagination! today I'm right back in the realm of fairytales...mystical woodlands, witches, princesses amd wolves.....fairytales and folklore that atretches across the times and the continents. how many people who enjoy them now, know that Sleeping Beauty and Snow White were written by the brothers Grimm?
I wrote the following two years ago; it feels just as relevant for me this very day! I hope you enjoy all the links there is enough magicalness in them to take you through to next Christmas time!
Folklore and Fairytales...
I have always been enchanted by fairytales, you are never too old for these timeless, enthralling old stories that have been passed on generation to generation.
I find myself both comforted and horrified by them, they are bold, rich dreamscapes, bursting with myth and legends, symbols and imagery, populated with mythical creatures and drenched with magic....
I love them more for their permission of the unbounded imagination and deep hallucinatory and hypnotic quality, than for their moral overtones. And though they mostly always all end happily ever after - which I am sure is absolutely the way it should be or I would be forever more disturbed by the darkness of some of them - they are also imbued with intensity and power, as much deeply beguiling as they are twee.
I have so many favourites, but found myself rereading the following 3 today!
Now take Hansel and Gretel for example, what a piece of work that is.. A story of child cruelty, abandonment and abuse, deception and murder, incredibly moving and dark, but at the same time magic and beautiful. And all that packed into a few pages! Of course, it does end happily ever after, except for the 'wicked' of course!
If you really want to indulge... Here is a link for a whole library of folktales and fairytales! Be sure to have some time on your hands before you click, you will be here for hours!
That is lovely, Lula. Thank you. And thank you for the great links.
I have always been enthralled by fairy tales, I had many books of fairy tales and fables when I was young that I read over and over.
I like the symbolism of fairy tales, and the insight into your own life that one can gleam from them.
My favourites were Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella.
I discovered a wonderful retelling of Cinderella when I was in Grade 3 that I read over and over again, called The Glass Slipper, by Eleanor Farjeon. My, I loved that book. It is at the library, and I have read it several times as an adult, and it does retain all of it's charm.
Here is a beautifully written review of it that I just discovered.
As for Beauty and the Beast, well, I feel differently about it now. I liked it for the sweetness and faithfullness of Belle. In fairy tales, women were put through very different tests than men, constantly proving their worthiness by what they could put up with. Which of course, was the way of a woman's life then. But I would like to know if there is a fable or fairy tale that has a man falling in love with a woman for her character, sporting a beastly face!

Yes indeed, it is an epic tale! It was never one of my favourite ones, I remember reading it and thinking it was going on too long! But in a movie, yes, I will bet it will translate very well to film.
This does look amazing with all the ingredients I love! magical thanks for posting Lady Trueheart, truly gorgeous looking movie. My prob is going to be seeing Kristen Stewart as anything other than Bella Swan..kind of takes the suspension of disbelief away.
