With the upcoming release of The Sorcerer's Apprentice on DvD, I thought we could have a place to talk about 'Fantasia'!

starry

I already posted the segment itself, upon which the Nic version is based, here but who has seen the rest of the movie?
For me it stands as the most magical film of all time, still alongside my Wizard of Oz love, these are probably my fav two films.

starry

Why? For me.... Because they are magical, dreamlike landscapes beyond space and time, they celebrate the infinite imagination, they dance through light and darkness, the spectrum of the rainbow and beyond rainbowsmiley: and they transport you on a beguiling wave of intense magical energy!

starry

It almost feels like sacrilege to post a section of the movie..There is nothing like watching it all in one go because it is a journey...for me as a student we used to watch it in a group ritualistically (alongside our various recreational psychedelic activities of a magical nature) ... So please consider this an advert of sorts for the whole movie (not the student like behaviour)!

Lula, your posts are so pretty, it is almost a sacrilege to answer them.

I have to confess that I have never watched Fantasia all the way through. Remember when Jon Turtelbaum said it was boring, well, in my mind I said a resounding 'Yes'! I never wanted to say that since everyone waxes poetic about it, and it is lovely, I know, but it could probably put me to sleep.

I always have liked the Mickey Mouse bit, because it is funny and the music is great, but th-th-th-that's all folks! (I like Looney Tunes better.)

Maybe if I enhanced the experience with some hallucinogens I would like it better. biggrin

And to be locked in a room with Jon Turtelbaum does not seem so bad to me.

it is for me too.... i'm glad you are touched by it that way, Sir flowerface

Lady True, the thing about hallucinogens from my perspective is they are a bit of a risky path to knocking down those rigid doorways in your head that organize reality into neat little boxes..so you can experience the flow of true reality rainbowsmiley but i'd recommend meditation instead, or just true silence and the return to the infinite inner world...then watch fantasia!

Lol...Jon T definitely has a certain something about him! in that latest interview, he said he didn't believe in magic....so maybe that's why he finds Fantasia boring...magic is everywhere if you are open enough to it! starry

Just kidding about the hallucinogens, Lula, not my thing at all. Don't need them to enjoy life, and they made me ill when I was younger and experimented.

I think I am too pragmatic to appreciate the joy of Fantasia, not enough faery in me!

Sounds about the same as my experiences Lady True... Not something I ever wish to return to now, or would recommend!

And the faery is not within thee? She is! Where ever did you put your wings? sadangel.gif i think i saw them somewhere...maybe in the secret passage?! bouncyLol! *watches as Lady Trueheart makes a quick exit before Lula grabs her by the hand for a skip around the castel again*

I used to watch Fantasia every time I went to my grandparents as a kid, not just because it was enthralling and the ending was wonderfully scary, but I somehow got it into my head that it was *educational*... that I was somehow bettering myself through watching it, because it had classical music!

I was a weird little kid!

I can identify with that Sprocket, and the music is amazing... what better way to learn?
'weird' is good...and not weird at all to me...curious, open, wondering, beautiful childlikeness!sun.gif

For me the movie brings us back to that childlike wonder in us all!starry

Awww you're right! I shouldn't be too down on my past child self, else how could I keep the flames of childish wonder burning? :D

Totally...! starry
it's a very pure place of wonder too...the open field of the imagination....the sad part for me is not that... it's how we cover that over....and how numb, cynical, oversaturated with other 'stuff' we become!

Lol...Fantasia is such a wonderful film for 'children of all ages' including me!sun.gif

The section I posted I think it is my favourite, because I love the faeries lighting everything up! And the animation is just stunning considering it's age! Isn't it dream like, the way it flows and morphs into the next stage and flows with the music?!!

Oh my...... i need to watch this this weekend! Oh joy! I may have a Wizard of Oz and Fantasia fest!joystarrystarry

OoooooO!!

I'm excited by this!spaceship
Fantasia is being rereleased along with Fantasia 2000, in the same week at The Sorcerer's Apprentice!starry

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10336/1107487-120.stm?cmpid=entertainment.xml

Has anyone seen the latter? I haven't!! And I cannot wait!

As a purist, I think I stupidly resisted the latter initially...
But I had a sneak peak courtesy of Youtube and oh my.....how beautiful is this?!! I'm currently looking at the snow laced trees out of my window and the starry sky....this excerpt transports me!
(resistance is futile, Lady True! You. Will. Love. This. )

I saw it when I saw just the far side of nipperdom! It was swell... nothing really unexpected in a way, but just great to see fantastic visuals surging and dipping along to music without any need for narrative.

Also, I now know what I'm asking for for Christmas! :D

Glad you enjoyed it Lady True!starry I had a tear in my eye too soppy narna that I am cry.gif

You are right Mr Sprocket...Fantasia, the original and I'm sure the newer version...is a wonderful, undulating journey with the visuals and music and all the more captivating because it is completely dialogue free.rainbowsmiley
