Well, let's see. These are the movies where Nic played a policeman, FBI agent or private detective that I know of. Maybe there are others? I haven't seen a few on this list yet, It Could Happen to You and Guarding Tess, so can't comment on them.
It could Happen to You Guarding Tess the Rock the Wicker Man Kick Ass ( ex-cop) Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call: New Orleans World Trade Center 8MM Snake Eyes Face/Off (when he was playing John Travolta, confusing) Honeymoon In Vegas
I am having a hard time choosing between Stanley or Big Daddy for favourite, so hard! Gotta be Stanley, though, I love Stanley!!!
Those two are favourite characters but for performance I could never choose; Rick, Terence, John, Stanley, et al, how the heck do you choose from that roster?!

Wow....I never realised quite the fullness of the Nic as movie cop list, until I saw yours Lady Trueheart!!
That's interesting!
Wasn't he a private detective in Honeymoon in Vegas...does that strictly count?! Heck let's keep it in anyway simply because Jack is awesome...and I am now getting visions of him in the flying Elvises (?Elvii?!)
I couldn't choose between them either Lady True...I have a soft spot for them all.
Considering these characters what I love is the shades he brings to them...the nuances, the conflictions......*has a million scenes playing in her mindscape simultaneously* ahhh stop! Lol
Alas .... We have over looked one though...... One crucial, pivotal, formative role.
One role which clearly laid the foundations for his future acting career as the movie cop......
One which we touched upon recently, quite indirectly........
I'm a Stanley fan myself. Although I do have a soft spot for Terence cuz he obviously was trying so hard to get it together, only his demons kept getting in the way. I usually root for the underdog, can ya tell? LOL!

"The play was “Our Town”, and he ended up playing “Constable Warren”, alright? It was literally like a guy who walks through the stage once and goes, “Nice night.”. Something like that. Every time we have a disagreement off and on the set, over something I’d say, I’d say “OK Constable Warren, we’ll do it your way."
and from Nic:
Nicolas Cage: "Well, first of all, let it be known that Jon Turteltaub is a really, really good actor. We were in the Beverly Hills High School drama department together, and we both auditioned for the lead in Our Town and he got the lead. He beat me out and I got to play Constable Warren, which was two lines of dialogue - and he will never let me forget it."
Believe it or not, this morning before I got out of bed I was thinking about what kind of movie I'd like to see Nic in. I got to thinking how I truly love mysteries but that you don't often see a really great movie production of one these days. I then got to thinking that the British truly know how to put together mystery programs for television that ring so true to life.......which then got me to thinking how I'd love to see Nic work with a British director who has that knack and that maybe him playing a cop....ie...a "Constable Warren...." would be a great role for him.

Indeed Constable Warren! How I'd love to see footage of that performance... with Jon T in the lead role too!
Ooh I love your ideas ladies... Nic would make an excellent Sherlock Holmes Lady T! I love the mysteries but also enjoy the magical / sci fi element... Which is why the idea of The Dresden files really appealed to me! It was originally intended to be a film I believe....that's a role I would love to see Nic in...a wizard supernatural investigator of some kind! Or.. I've always had this fantasy of him in like a Time travel movie where he finds himself transported to different times and universes...but then again..I do love Doctor Who!
