Hi All,
Mine was The Sorcerer's Apprentice in the movies and at home on DVD I watched Trapped In Paradise and The Family Man over the Christmas Holidays. Great films to watch with all my other Christmas films. I got The Sorcerer's Apprentice as a Christmas gift from my cousin on DVD. A nice Christmas gift by far.
My next film I want to see in the movies is Season of the Witch. Can't wait.
Nancy

Season of the Witch - not a remarkable film, but pleasingly told and well paced. I'd just seen The American the day before which was a Serious Film (tm) for Mature Adults so I was in the mood for something daft with zombie monks. Also, Ron Perlman has an ever deeper voice than Cage! Nic himself was playing it, I thought, surprisingly straight. The role of the knight was obviously a serious one for him.

I think Nic plays everything straight. He brings that to the table with him, and makes silly movies like Con Air classic and infinitely watchable for me. Would you have liked SOTW as well if an actor with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek had played the role?  I kind of liked seeing a real hero for a change.

Well, I think he plays everything earnestly, but not necessarily 'straight', by which I mean naturalist. So, in Vampire's Kiss for instance, Cage is remarkably committed to the role, while also being exaggerated, yet those exaggerations never feel incongrous with the character. As for whether I'd have liked OSTW more if there were a more tongue-in-cheek actor in the role, I don't think so, as it wasn't Nic's performance that didn't sell the film to me, it was more a few weaknesses in the script and under-developed characters (I suspect the script was cut down quite substantially). Plus, I'm not the biggest fantasy film fan, if truth be told, which is odd as I really love Ursula leGuin, Terry Patchett and a couple of other fantasy writers!

EDIT: Also, I don't want to give the impression that I disliked the film! I don't wanna be a downer! I liked it for sure, but I wasn't quite as captivated as I had hoped; but knowing the penchant for fantasy on this board, I think it's totally suited to you guys! biggrin

Hmm, yes, I take your meaning as to straight as naturalist. Very true about Vampire's Kiss, he based his performance on the silent screen actors, I believe, so therefore exaggerated movements and emoting.

Yes, I do agree about some weaknesses in the script and the direction the movie took somewhere along the way, near the end I guess, but I will say no more about that till it comes out on dvd. It actually pleasantly surprised me, I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did!

Did I sound critical, didn't mean to be, just responding to your comments. Which I always enjoy.

Did you see the trailor for Drive Angry 3D at the theatre? I did, it looks awesome!!!!
And another one called The Rite with Anthony Hopkins, looks very scary for those horror movie fans here.

I don't, I've only got to see it on a computer monitor! But I'll thoroughly 'cited about seeing it! I saw My Bloody Valentine 3D in a Dallas cinema full of screaming teenagers and absolutely loved it! :D

Don't worry Lady True, you didn't sound critical, I was just aware that this is a forum about Nic and I didn't want to sound down on his performance. There are films of his which I enjoy mroe than others, though I always find him captivating at the very least!

oooo enjoying your film chat muchly you two..afraid i can't join in in the Season Of The Witch stuff yet but I can't wait to see your reviews....do I hear some silver hooved caged galloping toward us from the distance Sprocket? Very lovely to feel your presence again by the way...i was worried you had buant your retinas on a laser eyepopping.gif

I am intrigued about the idea of Nic playinfg his knightly role completely straight...I was perhaps expecting something....i don't know...subtley something...no way near Monty Python esque....but as a homage to Lee and Price perchance some element of grandeur cheese and that tinge of humour. i am not puttng this well and can only wait to see the movie for myself! action

i agree with you Sprocket about not always playing the role straight there is an element of parody but cleverly done i an ambiguous way that is far more rewarding in some of his movies. and as for tongue in cheek...i think we discussed this before, Ghost Rider. I loved that element and yet as i said above it was ambiguous enough to know that he wa also genuinely bringing this character to life...which is down once again, for e anyway, to the way as an actor Nic seems to be able to blend multiple tones on the same palette simultaneously.painter.gif

last Nic film I saw was The weatherman, (it is currently on the BBC iplayer for uk folks)
and on this particular viewing I was struck by how you can almost miss how positive things are and what a success Dave Spritz made of things with both his children and his career, and his archery, and his escape from being a fast food target, by the end of the movie, because of the all pervading grim tone and self depracating borderline seeming misfortune as if he is not actually in control of his actions. i was also so incredibly moved all over again by the scene in the car with his father. and yet through all this, it is also a funny movie. I love it! film
