It´s a Japanese dance that originated after WWII to help people deal with their frustration. I witnessed a performance yesterday and it was absolutely fantastic, as in full of fantasy. You´ve never seen something remotely similar... Their prefromance took place in a Catholic church, BTW (?) and they danced to the sound of live harmonic chants and quarz bowls. Weirdest feeling ever, like everything around you suddently became unreal!
Here are some pics of butoh dancers for you to get the picture:
Hi Dame Ragnelle! you do get so see some of the most amazing things! I have seen some Butoh dance but only on the small screen...to me it seemed like a combination of mime, performance art and with elements of T'ai Chi and Qi gong! But clearly that's me trying to find a reference point for something with it's own rich tradition in it's own right.
What I loved about it was how primal it is.... how expressive..as if emerging from the earth...or from the depths of the unconscious...it's like being born into life. Far less literal than 'classic dance' (if there is such a thing) and feels to be a very deep powerful experience. Fascinating stuff... thank you for sharing your experience with us! .
