Nosferatu is genuinely scary, I remember thinking an old silent movie like that wouldn't bother me, and ended up turning it off. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari I have not seen before, and I look forward to watching it tomorrow, in broad daylight! It iwill be fun to revisit the others.
Agree about Nosferatu.... You would think a silent movie with less sensory stimulation would be less scary, but it seems to work the other way... Apart from the fact it's an incredible story to begin with there is an intensity to the silence, and the music, and the acting which is even more eerie without words and the gestures body language is emphasized.... ( by the way....Get a real buzz out of seeing the shadow ascending the stairs as echoed in Nic's Vampire's Kiss! )
That's why I provided the counter measure in the form of Young Frankenstein! So hilarious and slightly camp!
Just bumping this topic up for those who may have missed these classic movies, available in the public domain!
They are all awesome, and if you are a Nic fan you should definitely check out Nosferatu and this version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and then watch Nic's film Vampire's Kiss!
Great to revisit, Lula! Wonder where our posts about Nic and Barrymore and their mannerisms are, I was sure that we had had a discussion about that. Can't find it now though.
Just bumping this topic again, in time for Halloween........ if you have not already, do check out the awesome movies posted at the beginning of this thread!
