By the sounds of it, if Werner Herzog has anything to do with it, they will work together again HKNF!actionflowerface

Werner caught my attention when he mentioned how Bad Lieutenant had no campaign around it whatsoever, and was critically extremely well received!

I was stunned to come across an interview a few months ago where the interviewer and Herzog were having this quite formal looking exchange, and then the interviewer said something like, 'I can't decide whether Nicolas Cage can act or not.' it struck me how entrenched and ridiculous this kind of anti Nic criticism had become, to the point where a question like that would seem at all appropriate in the context of a respectable interview with a highly regarded director, about a highly regarded actor! no.gif

It was just like 'what?!!'

And Werner crushed him with assured grace and quiet intensity with something like 'i don't think that there can be any question Nicolas Cage is one of the greatest actors we have.' nod.gif

The whole exchange highlighted two things for me..how ludicrous and casual the critics have become and how very wrong, and how the great directors out there are keen to work with Nic and like us fans, can see just how ridiculous some of the anti Cage stuff is, it's a bandwagon, not actually based on true opinion of his work! *rant over*

It's good to know that artists such as Herzog have Nic's 'back'.   To me, Nic can be an 'over the top' actor at times but most the time his work is so subtle you don't even begin to see the 'acting'.  The nuances he brings to a character with just a shift in his eyes or the set of his jaw is simply amazing to me.  I've never seen it before and I highly doubt I'll ever see it again.  It's a shame he is so skewered and under-rated these days.  Disgusting really.  He deserves better in my eyes.

It does literally seem as though anyone can be a critic now, where are the knowledgeable people with discernment. I miss reading informed, intelligent comments on movies and acting, seems everyone says the same thing now. Someone should ask them if they are just phoning in their job, because they all say the same stupid, haha, I'm's so funny, comments. Like you say, Lula, it's a bandwagon, and I guess they don't like it if Nick isn't riding on it with them.
Holy Cow, just look at his body of work! Really, who can compare when you think about it.
Why wasn't he nominated for an Oscar last time? He should have been. Why isn't he a presenter at awards shows, he is a Hollywood legend, he should be courted. Maybe he is and turns them down, who knows.
I felt quite ill when I saw that Comic Con video where Amber Heard said she asked a friend if he was creepy. Right there in front of him as if he was some sleeze bag B actor. She should consider herself lucky she got to sit on the same dais with him, let alone be in a movie with him, especially given her great body of work. bleh
And he was so humble. I love that he is so humble and modest, but still has that great self-confidence in his work. There is an Unscripted video with Neil Labute, the director of The Wicker Man, he asks Nick about how he does something, I forget what, and Nick doesn't even pause and says  "I'm good". I love that. Stupid to even ask.

This comment rocks Lady Trueheart. Thank you for the passion and the truth, it resonates.lotus
Yeah, we're like an endangered species, it seems. Though I'm often accused of going the other way and looking at Nic's work through rose tinted glasses. Lol, it can't be helped that Nic's acting always lives up to my high expectations though! I have my preferences but it's very hard for me to find something I don't like or feel need to criticize in his actual performance with the character. What's going on in the rest of the film can sometimes be another matter but not often, because he always lifts a film to a higher level in my opinion.

Thanks for pointing out about Amber Heard's comment ,I did see that but think I numbed it out along with the rest of the taken-to-be-the-norm bull****.

I blame Simon Cowel! Seriously, our society has become so hypnotised and numb to this kind of casual criticism. Perhaps Nic is performing a public service actually, people need a scapegoat sometimes don't they. Remember Britney Spears and how she was continually slaughtered in the press? It snow balls and becomes the norm. *Celeb news* isn't fun for people unless there is a clown everyone can laugh at! It's so very detached from what is really going on and from the truth.

Yes, I'm glad Nic has that inner assurance the man has some rock solid strength in there. Let's hope he can feel also the sea of positive vibes from his fans and see beneath the debris on the surface!

I do admire Roger Ebert as a critic. But i also don't feel that we the general public are not good enough to also be critics. So the proliferation of mini blogs and so on is a mixed bag..it means more of the bandwagon jumping on but also more of a freedom and fluidity in terms of who has the biggest voice.

Let the Revolution begin!chickendance
